| Mount
Mercy was proud to house more than 600 Air and Army
National Guard members deployed to fight the rising
flood waters, and to serve as a command post for the
185th Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard.
Mount Mercy's reaction to the catastrophic flooding
is a powerful example of the College's mission to serve
those in need. Volunteering with flood relief efforts
and housing National Guard members is not a diversion
of our mission, but a sad fulfillment of it.

We
share with you here the bit of thanks and gratitude
we have received from various community members.
"I
have been so proud of Mount Mercy 's response to this
horrendous situation. My heart goes out to all my Mount
Mercy friends and hope that personal losses have been
minimal."

"I'm
deeply struck by the flood in Cedar Rapids, the event
was also mentioned in the Czech news. At first, I could
hardly believe what happened just a year after I left
Iowa. Thank you very much for the detailed information
and many pictures. I think it is admirable that many people
from Mount Mercy College participate as volunteers in
the flood relief. The willingness to help is one of the
things I also experienced many times during my year at
Mount Mercy, from the side of both the students and the
employees of the college. I hope that Cedar Rapids will
recover as soon as possible in the current conditions."

exchange student to Mount Mercy |

"I
just wanted to let you and all of the Mount Mercy staff
know that I was very proud to read that Mount Mercy stepped
in to help with the flood relief. I have always been proud
to say that I graduated from Mount Mercy...now I have
one more reason to brag about the college. I have friends
who still live in CR so I have been hearing about the
devastation through them and the TV. I was sad to see
all of the people without a home but I am very glad to
know that Mount Mercy was there to help out. Way to go!!!"

“We
were honored to be here [at Mount Mercy]; it’s
why we are on board – we are here to help others.
The 185th was pleased to help, although it is unfortunate
that this kind of disaster happened [in Cedar Rapids].
But we’re happy to help. I’ve said it over
and over again, you folks at Mount Mercy were outstanding.”
Lt
Col Neil Stockfleth, Maintenance Squad Commander, 185th
Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard |

| I
am a member of the 185th ARW that stayed at your campus
last week. I just wanted to pass on a giant thank you
to you for putting us up in rooms and allowing us to use
your facilities. I also want to thank anyone that provided
meals for us. It was nice to have a warm meal before and
after a long shift. Please pass along a thank you to anyone
that made it easier for us.

| “I
hope that you will pass this on to people mentioned as
well as the rest of the people that helped us while we
were your guests. My name is MSgt Ronald Bennett, I am
the Air National Guard member that twisted his ankle and
fell in the stairwell of Lundy Commons while helping with
the flood relief. I just wanted to express my sincere
thanks and gratitude for all the help, kindness, and generosity
that the faculty and summertime students extended to me
during my time of need. The people at Mt. Mercy exemplified
what we in the Air National Guard have as the Air Force
Core Values; Integrity First, Service Before Self, and
Excellence in all you do.”

| “Thank
you so much for sharing your letter on the recent and
on-going roll of Mt. Mercy recovery efforts in Floods
of 2008 that hit the Cedar Rapids area. It makes me proud
to be associated with Mount Mercy and the "good works"
being done by all. [It is] certainly a time to pull together
to help out as many in need as possible. Daily, my thoughts
and prayers have gone out to and have been lifted up for
all in need coping with and recovering from the recent
tornados and floods. May we all remain faithful to our
calling of service to others and community.”
